                                                                               Jeremey

Jeremy approached the front halls of Sacramento City College. His face was immobile, usually for him, signifying that he was extremely nervous. The campus was chaotic, like a dance floor in a night club. People were all over the place. They smoked, they chatted on their cell phones, they cursed. All of this, Jeremy was not used to in a school He was more adapt to order. In his previous schools, order was a policy. Everyone got in lines to go to the cafeteria and to class. They used proper language and they were certainly not allowed to use cell phones, and risked having them revoked if caught.

Jeremy navigated the halls to find his class-Orientation to college. He bumped into students as he found the class. But the instructor, Madeline Bennett, had not yet arrived. He was the first to arrive at the locked door. More students arrived and waited with him. They waited for about an hour. By the time Mrs. Bennett arrived, all the enrolled students had arrived, only eight including Jeremy.

Once they all took their seats, Mrs. Bennett introduced herself.

“Welcome to Orientation to College.” she said. “Just to cut to the chase, what we will be discussing in this class are basic steps to succeeding here in SCC. You will be given information on classes, prerequisites, enrollment, financial aid, etc. Before we begin, it’s only necessary to introduce ourselves.” She picked up a clipboard. “I have hear a list of eight names. When you hear your name called, please stand up, tell us your name and age and something about yourself. Tammy Reynolds.”

Tammy, a bony brunette with her hair done in a bun, stood.

“Hello, my name is Tammy. I’m twenty-two. I just recently moved from Enid, Oklahoma. I have a son named Mark. He’s two.”
